Agrovision has acquired GTEP from the Spanish research institute Irta. Agrovision won the European invitation for tenders concerning this takeover. GTEP is a management system for sows and pigs raised for their meat.
Spain has a very professional pig breeding industry with 2.5 million productive sows. With this the pig market is more than twice the size of that in the Netherlands. With this acquisition Agrovision is able to expand the number of its customers. In this way the shrinkage in the Dutch pig market will be compensated for, whereby Agrovision will remain in a position to invest in innovations. In addition, by means of this takeover Agrovision is able to extend its knowledge of the international pig breeding industry, and this has a spin-off for other international markets in which Agrovision is active and on the product development in the Netherlands.
Spanish pig market
There are four providers of management systems in Spain. Until the acquisition Irta had a 60% market share. Agrovision already had a 30% market share, and now, with a market share of 90%, Agrovision is the largest player on the Spanish market.
Irta
Irta is the research centre of the Catalonian government and is connected to the Lerida University. Irta concentrates on looking for technical innovations on the basis of scientific research. Irta carries out research for both the primary agricultural sector and the agricultural business and agricultural food sector. In the 80’s Irta needed results from the pig breeding industry in practice for scientific research. For this the BD-Porc company comparison system was set up. The computer program GTEP was developed to provide input to this.
